Visual Ergonomics Handbook

Jeffrey Anshel , "Visual Ergonomics Handbook"
CRC; 1 edition (June 22, 2005) | ISBN:1566706823 | 232 pages | PDF | 1,4 Mb

Viewing an electronic display screen varies significantly from reading text on paper and human eyes often suffer for it. Featuring cutting-edge research in the field of visual ergonomics, Visual Ergonomics Handbook focuses on vision and eye-care issues in both the office and industrial setting, including eye safety issues in industrial plants and construction sites. The text integrates the knowledge of leading experts in the fields of optometry, ergonomics, eye safety, and occupational medicine into a comprehensive, easy-to-read volume that also analyzes the economic benefits of developing a workplace visual ergonomics program. Written at a level that makes the information easily accessible, the chapter authors provide a simplified but thorough discussion of the process of eyesight and the components of the visual system. They explore the technology behind computer displays, discuss environmental issues surrounding eye symptoms and vision in the workplace, and examine lighting, glare, monitor position, vision distances, and other issues in detail. The chapter on glare in the workplace clarifies the role of anti-glare filters for display and the chapter on eye examinations covers the information that is critical to describe to the doctor. A discussion of the economic impact of ergonomic programs wraps up the main volume of the book. The book's multidisciplinary chapter authors give you wide ranging coverage of the issues and the editorial guidance of Jeffrey Anshel ensures that redundancies are weeded out. The first comprehensive handbook on visual ergonomics, it presents information that is adequately straightforward and technical.

The Busy Body

Penny Ingham, "The Busy Body"
Summersdale Publishers | 2002-10-17 | ISBN:1840242256 | 158 pages | PDF | 1,7 Mb

This title offers straightforward solutions to problems of posture and stress. It should change the way you stand, sit, move and work, helping eliminate neck and back problems, allieviate stress and avoid RSI. It should help you mover better, look leaner and feel more confident. Do you suffer from backache, tiredness, stiffness in the joints, digestive problems, lack of energy, shortness of breath, onset of RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury), irritability, or low self-esteem? If so, you need The Busy Body. The way that we habitually stand, sit and move can cause all the symptoms above. Few of us have the alert, easy posture we had as children. Over the years we have acquired damaging postural habits which incorporate and reinforce the strain and tension of everyday living. But because we have learnt these habits, we can unlearn them. Once you understand the problems poor posture can cause, you can use that understanding as the key to getting back in control of your busy life. Furthermore, the principles in The Busy Body can be incorporated into every day of your life. All the time you are at work you can be using the techniques in this book to make yourself feel better, fresher, more in control and more energised. The Busy Body sets out a programme for change. It is a body owner's handbook for you to regain and maintain ease, poise and pain-free posture. About the authors: Penny Ingham trained as an Alexander Technique teacher with Don Burton and has been in private practice since 1988. She is a member of the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique and has been published in its journal. Besides her work with individual pupils, many of whom are referred to her by medical practitioners, she has run courses in the Alexander Technique in Universities and colleges of Further Education and she is a visiting teacher at Cumbria Alexander Training, Kendal, helping to train Alexander teachers. She has taught in Greece and Australia and gives talks and holds workshops nationally. Penny has a special interest in applying the Alexander Technique to help those with problems arising from their work and has extensive experience as a consultant to groups and individuals in the workplace. Colin Shelbourn was born in Dorset in 1956 and moved to Cumbria in 1971. He decided to become a writer and cartoonist at the age of ten but kept being told he had to get a proper job first and therefore took a degree in psychology from the University of York to throw everybody off the scent. Then, after four years of various proper jobs (including writing space comics for DC Thompson), he became a freelance cartoonist and writer. His cartoons have since been published in Reader's Digest, Private Eye, Saga magazine, The Times and The Independent. As a writer he specialises in books on hiking and the Lake District. He became a pupil of Penny Ingham's in 1994 after attending one of her weekend courses in the Alexander Technique. Correcting some of the regular postural problems Colin was causing himself through using a keyboard led them to believe others might benefit from an illustrated book of postural advice and exercises, aimed specifically at busy office workers. THE BUSY BODY is the result.

The History of Terrorism: From Antiquity to al Qaeda

Gérard Chaliand, Arnaud Blin, "The History of Terrorism: From Antiquity to al Qaeda "
University of California Press; 1 edition (August 1, 2007) | ISBN:0520247094 | 483 pages | PDF | 1,5 Mb

Book Description
This authoritative work provides an essential perspective on terrorism by offering a rare opportunity for analysis and reflection at a time of ongoing violence, chilling threats, and renewed reprisals. In it, some of the best international specialists working on the subject today examine terrorism's long and complex history from antiquity to the present day and find that terror, long the weapon of the weak against the strong, is a tactic as old as warfare itself. Beginning with the Zealots of Antiquity, the contributors discuss the Assassins of the Middle Ages, the 1789 Terror movement in Europe, Bolshevik terrorism during the Russian Revolution, Stalinism, "resistance" terrorism during World War II, and Latin American revolutionary movements of the late 1960s. Finally, they consider the emergence of modern transnational terrorism, focusing on the roots of Islamic terrorism, al Qaeda, and the rise of the contemporary suicide martyr. Along the way, they provide a groundbreaking analysis of how terrorism has been perceived throughout history. What becomes powerfully clear is that only through deeper understanding can we fully grasp the present dangers of a phenomenon whose repercussions are far from over.

Bonding Theory for Metals and Alloys

Frederick E. Wang, "Bonding Theory for Metals and Alloys"
Elsevier Science (October 28, 2005) | ISBN:0444519785 | 256 pages | PDF | 11,8 Mb

Bonding Theory for Metals and Alloys exhorts the potential existence of covalent bonding in metals and alloys. Through the recognition of the covalent bond in coexistence with the 'free' electron band, the book describes and demonstrates how the many experimental observations on metals and alloys can all be reconciled. Subsequently, it shows how the individual view of metals and alloys by physicists, chemists and metallurgists can be unified. The physical phenomena of metals and alloys covered in this book are: Miscibility Gap between two liquid metals; Phase Equilibrium Diagrams; Phenomenon of Melting. Superconductivity; Nitinol; A Metal-Alloy with Memory; Mechanical Properties; Liquid Metal Embrittlement; Superplasticity; Corrosion; The author introduces a new theory based on 'Covalon' conduction, which forms the basis for a new approach to the theory of superconductivity. This new approach not only explains the many observations made on the phenomenon of superconductivity but also makes predictions that have been confirmed.

* Openly recognizes the electrons as the most important and the only factor in understanding metals and alloys
* Proposes "Covalon" conduction theory, which carries current in covalent bonded pairs
* Investigates phase diagrams both from theoretical and experimental point of view

Professionalism and Ethics - A Q & a Self- Study Guide for Medical Professionals

Professionalism and Ethics - A Q & a Self- Study Guide for Medical Professionals
Stationary Office | 2008-01-15 | ISBN: 1585622443 | 2 MB

Ethics is elegant and earthy. Conceptually, ethics explores and brings meaning to many of the most essential, most complex aspects of human experience. A broad field of knowledge, ethics is rooted in history, enriched by multidisciplinary scholarship, and textured by diverse perspectives. Ethics provides a structure for appreciating, analyzing, and interpreting; it offers methods of learning and ways of knowing.

This elegant discipline of ethics is expressed compellingly in the ecology of the health care professions. Abstract ideas related to the distinct moral aspects of human experience—such as kindness, trust, liberty, compassion, sacrifice, dignity, humility, fairness, generosity, goodness, and wisdom—become things that you can touch and actions that you can take when caring for people who are ill and suffering. It is this earthy application to clinical, clinical research, and clinical training situations that, in my view, reveals the true nature of ethics.
